Josephine and Other Poems
1858, First Edition. Hardcover, publisher's decoratively embossed red cloth, gilt title, aeg. 117 pp., engraved frontis. A Fair copy. Cloth worn and peeling at the spine ends. Rear board heavily stained and soiled (and possibly moldy) from old dampstaining; rear fly leaf is stuck to the rear pastedown; inner hinges cracked; frontis foxed; old gift inscription to the fly leaf. Despite the flaws, the poems themselves are clean and unmarked. A rare book -- OCLC locates only 8 copies. George Marlow Everhart, 1826-1891, was the president of Huntsville (Alabama) female college when he published this work, and later became a priest in the Episcopal church. Everhart is perhaps most famous for delivering a scathing sermon 'at' Jefferson Davis and a host of Southern generals denouncing the Lincoln assassination only 8 days after he died.
